Swiftwater Elementary Center

Project Description

In 2007, the Pocono Mountain School District was in need of a new school to meet the area’s growing student population. A brand new facility was soon planned and Renew’s staff was chosen to provide the civil design and landscape architecture for the new school.

Swiftwater Elementary Center (located in Paradise Township, Monroe County) was completed in the summer of 2008. The 211,000 square foot / 1,200 student facility is state of the art, and planned with the surrounding community in mind. Renew’s staff worked closely with the architect and the township to ensure that the school’s site was a compliment to the building’s unique angle of approach.

Bus access and parking areas are located on the classroom side of the new facility, and clearly separated from staff parking and parent drop-off areas to maintain a clean vehicular circulation pattern. A multi-purpose sports field makes the most of the school’s compact rear yard area. New playgrounds have been designed to accommodate the younger students. The site’s stormwater actually drains to a natural wetland across Bowman Road in front of the school. Our staff utilized wet basins and decorative retaining walls to control the water’s release rate and ensure that a large storm would never create a hazard across the road.

Swiftwater Elementary Center has become a bright spot in the Pocono Mountain School District’s growing list of schools – something both the district students and the surrounding community are proud of.
